Europe, My Nana, and the River That Changed Everything

My first river cruise with Riverside Luxury Cruises became a journey of healing, joy, and connection I didn’t expect, but will never forget.

Dear Travelers and Dreamers,

Have you ever looked at a map of Europe and felt overwhelmed by the possibilities, unsure of where to start, what to see, or how to even begin planning?

That was me until Riverside Luxury Cruises came into my life.

In May, my husband and I embarked on a 7-night river cruise aboard the stunning Debussy, sailing from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland. It was my very first river cruise and what I thought would be a beautiful vacation turned out to be so much more. It was healing. It was powerful. It was personal.

You see, this trip had deeper meaning. I wasn’t just going to Europe for sightseeing. I was following the footsteps of my Nana, who grew up in Giessen, Germany. She immigrated to the U.S. after meeting my Tata, who was stationed nearby. They were married for 60 years, raised a beautiful family, and were the cornerstone of my childhood. I was incredibly close to her.

When I told her that I was finally going to Europe, to see where she grew up and cruise along the very river she once sailed with my mom, the Rhine she was shocked, emotional, and so happy. Sadly, in February 2025, just months before our trip, I lost my sweet Nana.

Suddenly, this cruise became a journey of remembrance and connection. It was no longer just about seeing castles or sipping wine. It was about walking the cobblestone streets she once walked. It was about standing in front of her childhood apartment in Giessen and feeling her presence with me.

The Riverside Experience
Riverside Luxury Cruises was everything I didn’t know I needed. For those of you who love the elevated world of all-inclusive resorts, this is an effortless transition. But with Riverside, it’s more than just luxury, it’s intention, emotion, and exquisite detail.

I had so many questions before boarding:
Will I feel motion sickness? (I didn’t.)
Will it feel too formal? (It didn’t.)
Who cruises on a river ship anyway?

The answer: a mix of people, from late 20s to 70s, and what surprised me most was how welcoming and warm everyone was. There was laughter, shared wine, and meaningful conversations with guests from all walks of life.

Our Stateroom: The Melody

We stayed in room 236, the lead-in category, and it was stunning. From the plush pillows to the thoughtful service (Maria, our room attendant, was an angel!), every detail was just right. The minibar was restocked daily, we had extra water bottles placed in our room when they noticed we drank a lot, and even the conditioner worked great on my curly hair!

The Food, Oh, the Food…

Let me just say, I still dream of the butter. Yes, the butter. Every meal was a delight. As a picky eater, I appreciated that Riverside offered both a fixed menu and rotating chef’s specials, while my husband loved exploring the adventurous options. The basil lemonade? A must. The jalapeño margaritas? Perfection. The bread? Dangerous.

24-hour room service meant we were never hungry, and even burgers on the top deck hit the spot. BBQ night under the stars was magical, and emotional. An opera singer sang Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, the last song my Nana ever heard before passing. I cried. Another guest next to me cried too. It was beautiful, and unforgettable.

Entertainment & Vibe

The vibe? Effortless elegance. Quiet mornings, lively evenings, game nights, deck side chats. The entertainment was soulful and reflective, perfect for the pace of river life. I do think Riverside is still evolving to attract a younger crowd, but even now, it’s a wonderful mix of generations blending beautifully.

Tours & Excursions

All excursions were included, and fabulous. From exploring quaint French towns to touring the majestic Cologne Cathedral and the Heidelberg Castle, each stop was rich with history. We also appreciated the flexibility to venture off on our own when desired. The buses were comfortable, the guides excellent, and very witty!

The Top Deck , My Sanctuary
The top deck became my happy place. Whether I was napping under a blanket, sipping lemonade, or taking in the castles with my binoculars, it felt peaceful and inspiring. We even celebrated our 13-year wedding anniversary up there, and our butler surprised us by decorating our room—such a sweet gesture.

Additional Perks

  • Onboard laundry = game changer (we packed light with just carry-ons).
  • Bikes available when docked.
  • Small pool, spa services, and a compact but solid gym.
  • Private transfers to/from the ship, easy and seamless.

A Life-Changing Journey
This trip changed me. It helped me process grief, reconnect with my roots, and brought my husband and I even closer. Standing in front of the apartment my Nana grew up in, just a few days after floating peacefully down the Rhine, I felt something heal inside me.

Riverside Luxury Cruises gave me the space, the comfort, and the beauty I didn’t know I needed. And now, I want that for you too.

If you’ve ever thought Europe was too overwhelming to plan… if you’ve ever wanted luxury without stuffiness… if you’re looking for meaningful travel that moves your soul, Riverside might be your answer too.

Let’s talk about creating your journey. Whether you’re dreaming of wine in Alsace or following your own family’s story downriver, I’m here to help make it happen.
